Soooo, a few weeks ago my friend Laila found out this blog and gave me the amazing suggestion of writing some “Humans of New York” posts, but “Utrecht” version! I loved the idea and of course, she had to be the first one to have her story published, so here it is!
Hey my name is Laila El Helw, I am an 18 year old Egyptian studying in Utrecht. If I were to give my 10 year old self some advice it would definitely be to not be afraid of anything and that everything happens for a reason. I strongly stand with the ideology that everything happens for a reason, and me being here in Utrecht is certainly one of the biggest accomplishments that I have fulfilled during my lifetime. Living abroad alone (with no friends and family that I know here) has certainly pushed me out of my comfort zone numerous of times and has challenged me everyday. But most importantly it has made me more open to new concepts and ideas and of course to fully respect every person regardless of there background. The dutch culture is definitely way different than the Egyptian one and I hope that by time I learn more about the culture and hopefully implement that into my day to day life. Finally, I am thankful of the friends I have made here and I hope they will turn into life long friendships!
